On Human Person

“[And] therefore we must study the man who is in the most perfect state both body and soul, for in him we shall see the true relation of the two; although in bad or corrupted natures the body will often appear to rule over the soul, because they are in evil and unnatural condition.”

 (Politics, 1254a34-36)

The human person is the highest and most precious being that God had created. For Aristotle, the human person is a socio-political being. Apart from being a rational being, the human person is an entity that which is capable of feeling emotions, a sentient being. Another characteristic that which the human person possesses, is that it cannot only know the things other than itself but also it can make itself as the object of its own inquiry, which makes us capable of knowing ourselves and enabling us to develop and become better. But, as the time passed, the understanding of the human person evolved into a more complicated endeavor.  Today, people are taking more selfies rather than taking time in knowing and reflecting one’s self. People were so hooked in the digital world which the media created. The digitalization had inculcated a new understanding of what a human person is. We have indeed progressed, but, our perception toward a person has been reduced into a pragmatic understanding. People nowadays would not give or do something to a person in which he/she knows he/she will not gain anything. Though there are a lot of factors that contributes to this kind of mentality such as economic and social factors, but then, a person is a person that is a being equal to us. The parasitic thinking have succumbed to a more oppressive and destructive conception of man. The soul becomes corrupted in which it becomes an agent of evil doings. And if were not able to tend to it and address the condition the body is present, it could be destructive to the person and to others for our actions will always have consequences and implications to us and to the society.



One’s own understanding of human conception is very crucial as to it affects one’s decision over matter that which touches the other person and society. Just like in the past, when Adolf Hitler massacred almost six million Jews during the holocaust. We could really say that it was not a good thing but then I believe that at some point we must take a look into what is his understanding of human person. Currently the Russia’s president Vladimir Putin is engaged into conflict with the country of Ukraine, in which it had cost many lives and had caused fear for everybody around the world. But, as we could see how devastating his actions maybe we should take a look as to what also his conception a human person. Maybe with that step, we could be able to understand why he has such kind of thinking. To understand the human person and other peoples understanding of human person is very essential. As a social being we should not only understand the person but also his views, by this action I believe that we could be able to come up with a common ground in which each person will meet halfway. For to understand human person, is to understand oneself and the other.

      Is there a Filipino thought? An ingenuous idea that which we can say 'this belongs to Filipino's'. Are we not just a bunch of collection of cultures? Are not our ideas a mere derivative of a specific ideology?
